Poker Rankings

The following poker hands are ranked in order of strength:

Royal Flush - A royal flush is a 5 card sequence of the same suit which includes 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace. This is the king of kings in poker hands and conquers all.

Straight Flush - A straight flush consists of any five card sequence in the same suit. An example of a straight flush would be having all Hearts and your cards reading Jack, Ten, Nine, Eight, and Seven. If two people both held straight flushes, then the player that held the highest card value of the straight would be deemed the winner. A king is to be the highest card possible in a straight flush as the Ace would make the hand a Royal Flush.

Four of a kind - A four of a kind poker hand consists of four cards that have the same value. Example: Queen, Queen, Queen, and Queen, in your hand. A four of a kind poker hand is the 3rd strongest hand you can get in poker. It will beat all hands except a royal flush and a straight flush.

Full house - A full house poker hand consists of a three of a kind plus a pair. An example of a full house poker hand would be: Jack, Jack, Jack, Four, Four. Basically any three of a kind and a pair make a full house. If two players at the same poker table have a full house, the tie is broken by the poker hand that has the best three of a kind.

Flush - A flush poker hand consists of all five cards being of the same suited cards. Example of a flush poker hand: Ace of Hearts, 10 of Hearts, 8 of Hearts, 5 of Hearts, and the Three of Hearts. All five cards are hearts and in any particular order. If there are two people each holding a flush hand then the player holding the highest ranking card wins. If the highest card ties the other players then the next highest card of the hands are compared until a unique high card is found.

Straight - A straight is a poker hand that consists of 5 cards in order, but not in any particular suit. An example of a straight would be: 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack. If two players both have straights the player with the highest card in their straight wins. An Ace can be used as both a high card in a straight such as Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten and is considered to be the highest straight possible or it can can't as a low card in a straight such as Five, Four, Three, Two, Ace where this is the lowest possible straight and the five is considered the high end of the straight.

Three of a Kind - A three of a kind poker hand consists of getting three of the same card. For Example Eight, Eight and Eight. If there are two three of a kinds at a poker table the highest set of three cards wins. Three Aces are the highest possible three of a kind.

Two Pair - A poker hand containing two pair would mean that a play has two pairs of the same cards. An example of two pair would be: King , King, Four, Four. If two players have two pair the winner is the player with the highest ranking pair in their hand with two Aces being the highest pair available.

Pair - A pair consists of two of the same card. This is a very common occurence in a poker hand. Often times other players at the poker table will also have a pair. The winner is determined by the player that holds the highest pair. A pair of Aces is the higherst available.
